报告题目: Flash Fiction in American Literature 美国文学中的微小说

报告内容:This lecture introduces a new literary tradition in America: Flash Fiction. The term was coined by scholar and writer James Thomas, in 1992, to describe a popular trend in modern literature--very short stories. The very short story, known as "flash" in American literature, or "micro," "nano," and "sudden" fiction in other cultures and movements, has its roots in ancient Greek literature. The flash fiction form often follows the fable form, with a modern caveat. The form typically adheres to Poe's "Unity of Impression," prioritizing the effect it has on its reader, rather than a moral or didactic agenda. Flash fiction thus occupies the border between the strange and the familiar, giving free rein to experimentation. The term "flash" refers to not only the briefness of the form, but also the impact (and exultation of) the epiphany on its reader. Flash fiction has emerged (possibility as a result of its popularity among new and young writers, and its ubiquity in American literary pedagogy) as a staple of American literature. The lecture will also introduce several sample pieces of flash prose as well as notable international and American pioneers of the form.
